is situated at the outer edge of mainland China’s continental
shelf , where cool coastal currents, the warm Black Current
, and seasonal monsoons combine to form a powerful basic productivity
that gives rise to extremely rich resources of bottom-dwelling
fish as well as mid-and upperlayer fish ,shellfish , and crustaceans.In
addition, Taiwan’s favorable geographic location makes it a
convenient base for fishing boats traveling to the major fishing
grounds of the world. These factors give Taiwan outstanding
natural conditions for the oceanic fishery industry
The
ROC’s fishery industry can divided, in accordance with its nature
and area of operations , into four major categories: deep-sea
fishery , costal fishery , and aquaculture. Our fishery industry
has developed rapidly over the past 40 years ,its total production
volume increasing from just over 120,000 metric tons in 1952
to more than 1.42 million metric tons in 1993 . At the same
time, the industry ‘s production value rose from NT$500 million
to more than NT$93.1 billion.In this total quantity the ratio
of deep-sea fishing rose from 15.2% in 1952 to 58.6% in 1993;in
term of value . the ratio grew from 14.2% to 45.8%. Deep-sea
operations, therefore, have become the most important sector
of the ROC’s fishery industry.
Fishing and affiliated industries
(such as marine products processing ,fish marketing ,shipbuilding
, and the manufacture of shipboard machinery and fishgears have
developed into a major industrial system in the ROC, and the
employment opportunities and production value created by this
system have made huge contributions to the nation’s macroeconomic
development. )

With
guidance from the government , the acceleration of fishery technology
development by academic and research institutions, and strenuous
efforts by those involved in fishing operations, the ROC’s fishery
industry has developed rapidly and has now entered a stage of
equal emphasis on production and resources conservation. In
the future development of the nation’s fishery industry coastal
fishing will move in the direction of fishery rights and recreational
fishing ; offshore fishing will be oriented toward a resources
management type of fishery development ; deep sea fishing will
continue with the strengthening of international fishery cooperation
; and aquaculture will see the vigorous promotion of oceanic
aquaculture planning and reinforced fish pond management. With
these developments, prospects are bright for the creation of
new horizons for the nation’s fishery industry.

This display area divides the
development of the RDC’s fishery industry into five categories
;
(1)Fishery Systems , including
fishery administration, education , training, research,
and fishermen’s associations;
(2)Fishery Types, including catch volumes nd values, modles
of coastal and offshore fish, and affiliated industries;
(3)Fishery Statistics, including overall production volume
and value, number of fishmen, and changes in fishing boats;
(4)Wealthy Fishing Villages; and
(5)Fishery Promotion Films. Systematic introductions presented
through vivid charts, photographic transparencies, models,
and films are designed to give visitors a through understanding
of the present status and future directions of fishery
development in the ROC. |

he
ROC’s deep sea fishing industry consists primarily of long
– line tuna fishing , squid fishing, large-scale purse seine
fishing ,trawl, and rod-spread net fishing. Prior to 1983
this sector of the industry experienced sluggish growth because
of the impact of the energy crisis; then, from 1983 to 1988,
the effects of the government’s deep sea fishery development
program began to be felt and expansion accelerated. After
1988, however, operations in major fishing grounds were severely
constricted because of the imposition of 200-nautical-mile
economic zones many countries, and seizures of fishing boats
become a frequent occurrence. With the rise of oceanic environmental
protection sentiment, furthermore, an international ban on
driftnet fishing was imposed in 1993.These developments have
brought a slowdown in the ROC’s deep sea fishing industry,
and the continued growth of this sector of the industry can
be assured only through stronger international cooperation
and development of resources.
This area divides displays of the development of the deep
sea fishing industry into five categories:
(1) Major Elements
in Deep Sea Fishing, including displays of fishing equipment,
fishing boat templates , and fish identification;
(2)Major Fishing Methods in the Taiwan Area,
including long-line tuna fishing, large-scale purse seine
fishing, collective surround net fishing, pair trawl fishing,
single trawl fishing, squid fishing, and rod-spread net fishing;
(3)Oceanic Fishery Films ;
(4)Type of Deep Sea Fishing,including catch
volume and value, and models of oceanic fish;and
(5)International Fishery Cooperation, including
nations involved in fishery cooperation, overseas fishery
bases,fishing grounds, and types of fish harveeep Sea Fishing
Cooperation, isted. These displays give visitors a deeper
overview of the ROC's deep sea fishery industry through realistic
dynamic and exhibits of actual fishing equipment, photographic
transparencies, models, films, and charts.

deep sea Fishing Center is the only fishery training organization
in the ROC’s main task is to upgrade the quality of the nation’s
fishing boat crew by training core crewmen and ordinary fishermen
in basic skills, leadership, and survival and rescues at sea,
as well as by rein forcing training in discipline. Over the
past 20-odd years the Center has trained more than 80,000
fishery professionals, who practice their craft without fanfare
throughout the oceans of the world and contribute their efforts
to the prosperous development of the ROC’s fishery industry.
This area displays the current
status of the Fishing Training Center in four categories

Facilities,
including history, training objectives, organizational
system, and environmental models; |
| (2) |
Training courses,
including core crew and ordinary fishermen’s training
specialized training, and commissioned training; |
| (3) |
Training Conditions,
including computerized multimedia teaching equipment,
training ship and teaching materials; and |
| (4) |
Fish Harvest
Training including long-line tuna fishing with automatic
line casting machines and automatic mechanized squid fishing
operations. Systematic explanations are presented through
detailed chars, photographic transparencies, models, and
actual equipment, all of which is designed to give trainees
and visitors a deeper understanding of the Center’s operations
and of fishing industry automation. |

we look to the future, we can state our expectation for the
development of the ROC ‘ s fishery as follows:
| 1. |
On the high seas and in Executive Economic
Zones, our deep sea fishing boats will participate in
the orderly exploitation of oceanic fishery resources
through internationally recognized and fishery cooperation.
The deep sea fishing industry will, in this way, become
a force in the government’s expansion and reinforcement
of its external relations. |
| 2. |
The number of boats engaged in costal and offshore
operations will be subject to rational control, and will
be reduced year by year. In this way, the catch of individual
boats will rise, and the economies of fishing villages
will gradually improve. |
| 3. |
Measure for the development of the fishery industry
will be instituted in their proper order, the cultivation
of coastal and offshore fishery resources will gradually
produce results, and the operational from of oceanic farms
will take shpae. |
| 4. |
Rational planning will e carried out for all kinds
of fishing activities in coastal. In addition to providing
fishing grounds for professional who fish for a living,
coastal areas will also offer opportunities for leisure
activities such as deep sea fishing. |
| 5. |
Aquaculture will be subject to proper planning and management.
Onshore fish farms will make full uses of water recycling,
thereby freeing themselves from the restrictions of limited
water sources. And they supply high-grade marine products
to the market in abundant amounts. |
