This project aimed to examine the age and growth of South Pacific albacore by means of character reading and length frequency analysis. The 1st dorsal spines were collected by observers from Taiwanese distant water fishing vessels operated in South Pacific. Since the central portion of the spines would become vascularized with increasing ages, some specimens were also collected their?caudal vertebra age characters to adjust the ring counts in the vascularized core portion. By using a dorsal spine character accompanied by a justification model to adjust the ring counts in the vascularized core, the L∞, K and t0 of the von Bertalanffy’s growth equation would then be able to estimate. Because the samples for character reading are still unavailable, the project tried to use the body length data of albacores measured by observers for calculating the L∞,?k value of von Bertalanffy’s equation by Multifan method and then compared such values obtained from character reading. A total of 19,328 body length data were used in Multifan model from 17 months data collected in 2003, 2006 and 2007. The estimated k and???? L∞ for this species are 0.211yr-1 and 138.9cm, respectively. |
